Our top 4 predictions for BaselWorld 2019 - Phoenix Watch Company

It’s that time of the year every watch enthusiast looks forward to. In just about 24 hours from now, from the 21st of March to the 26th of March, the biggest and the most famous event in the horological industry is going to start. Basel, Switzerland takes on a new challenge every year, hosting the Baselworld where all the watch brands you can think of, come together to showcase their latest releases.

The history of Baselworld:

Did you know the history of Baselworld is more than a hundred years old? It all started about a century ago, in 1917. That was when a trade fair for Swiss goods was organised, including jewelry and watches called Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (MUBA). They also had exhibitors from other industries as well.

Believe it or not, the first fair actually took place in a casino in Basel and was such a big hit, that it came to be known as one of the biggest breakthroughs in the wristwatch market, which was in its nascent stages. Tissot, Longines, Thommen were one of the first manufacturers to be highlighting their goods in the fair. By 1931, watches had their own fair, which is now known as the Baselworld.

By the turn of the century, the fair increased so much in popularity that they considered moving it to the outskirts of Basel, the idea was later rejected, leading to huge renovations, and what we see today.

Baselworld 2019:

1. The Tudor 79090:

A teaser by Tudor on their social media channels, with a close-up shot of a triangular-shaped marker, with the caption “What’s next?” got us thinking about what it could be. The first watch that came to our mind is the Tudor Prince OsyterDate Submariner (Also known as 79090). Let’s wait and see if our prediction comes true!

2. Patek Philippe Calatrava :

Noticeably absent last year in Patek Philippe’s collection was the Calatrava. The last year for Patek Philippe concentrated on the Patek Philippe Nautilus Perpetual Calendar (5740) but not on the Calatrava, which leads us to believe there is a new Calatrava model in the wings, waiting to be unveiled in Baselworld 2019.

3. Rolex:

Rolex has always been a brand known to pleasantly surprise their fans with new treats every year. Here’s what we see in the future for Rolex at Baselworld 2019.

A) New GMT: Last year at the Baselworld, Rolex unveiled the GMT-Master II with a Pepsi bezel, in steel. Following rumours that the Batman (116710BLNR) is going out of production, we predict that there will be a new GMT model, in the works. There are high chances of the Coke model with the red and black bezel being tweaked again, given its popularity among watch collectors.

B) Two-Tone Daytona: Another addition from the Rolex kitty this year could be a Rolex Two tone Daytona, but this time with a new ceramic bezel. We remember Rolex replacing the steel Daytona with a ceramic bezel, and given the accolades it received, the same could be replicated for the two-tone Daytona as well, this year.

Now that you’ve read our predictions, what do you think is going to be the star of the show this year? A Rolex Coke? The Daytona? Or maybe something we’ve not thought about yet?
